An impressive number of Philadelphia’s top lawyers worked for Arlen Specter, the U.S. Senator who passed away in October, when he was Philadelphia District Attorney. That class included Clifford Haines, the future chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association and president of the Pennsylvania Bar Association; Ronald D. Castille, chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court; and two Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court president judges, Bonnie Leadbetter and James Gardner Colins.

It also included two Ballard Spahr attorneys - Edward G. Rendell, the former governor of Pennsylvania, and Arthur Makadon, a litigator at Ballard Spahr and the former chair of the firm.
