As lawyer Clifford Haines was watching Sunday’s Eagles game with former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, both men’s thoughts were elsewhere after they learned that their mentor, former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, died earlier that morning.

“If not for Arlen, I wouldn’t be sitting here,” Mr. Haines told Gov. Rendell.

“Neither would I,” Rendell responded.

Mr. Haines and the governor are among a legion of some of the city’s top lawyers who worked for Sen. Specter when he was Philadelphia District Attorney from 1965 and 1973. Others who worked for the senator during that period include former Ballard Spahr Chairman Arthur Makadon.
