Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld President Obama's health care reform law, consumers need to be aware of how the new law will affect their insurance coverage. For example, two years from now, consumers will be able to buy insurance through state-run health care exchanges.

Some employers that don’t offer health insurance to employees now may decide to start offering it, while other employers may decide to drop their health benefits and let employees buy their own insurance through the state-run exchanges.

“Individuals need to pay close attention to what’s going to be available at the exchange level,” said Brian M. Pinheiro, Practice Leader of the Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Group at Ballard Spahr. “It might be better for them to go to the exchange. We may see a sea change in the way our health care coverage is delivered these days. If (the exchanges) work well, they will be a viable alternative.”
