A continuing investigation by the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office has uncovered a purported $1 million embezzlement within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Anita Guzzardi is accused of the theft, which allegedly took place over six years. Ms. Guzzardi worked her way up in the Archdiocese's finance offices, rising from coordinator to controller and then acting CFO. The Archdiocese has since fired her.

A spokeswoman for the Archdiocese said it continued to work the the D.A.'s office in the investigation into the theft. Last year, the church hired Henry E. Hockeimer, Jr., a Ballard Spahr litigation partner in Philadelphia, to do an internal audit.
