Most law firms in the nation’s capital are shrinking, but Ballard Spahr is among the firms whose Washington presence grew in 2011, according to a survey by Legal Times.

In the Legal Times 150—an annual ranking of the Washington area’s largest law offices—the paper reported that the number of attorneys employed at Washington firms is down by about 350, a decrease of about 2.2 percent, to slightly fewer than 15,000.

Attorney Joseph A. Fanone, Managing Partner of Ballard Spahr’s Washington office, said the firm’s energy, real estate, and public finance practices enjoyed a strong year and supported a net increase in the number of resident lawyers from 35 to 41.

“We have attempted, over the course of the last three years, plus starting with the recession in 2008, to reassess our core practice groups and the opportunities that those practice groups have,” Fanone said. “What we have attempted to do is focus on opportunities that fit within our areas of expertise and take advantage of them.”
