Philadelphia-area law firms have hired dozens of lawyers over the past year to keep pace with the growing demand for representation from residential mortgage lenders and the various related service companies.

Ballard Spahr’s Consumer Financial Services Group has added to its existing litigation strength in mortgage banking by taking the mortgage banking practice from Patton Boggs' Washington office. The group consists of partners Richard J. Andreano, Jr., John D. Socknat, and Michael S. Waldron, and associate Reid F. Herlihy.

"We have a very large practice defending mortgage banking companies, residential mortgage lenders, and servicers that get sued in class actions and other kinds of lawsuits and all kinds of government enforcement proceedings," said Alan S. Kaplinsky, head of the consumer financial services practice. "We didn't have nearly as large a regulatory component and had been looking for some time to find a group that could fill in what I considered an area that needed to be bolstered."
