An explosive expansion of the Internet’s domain name system is creating new challenges for businesses that rely heavily on connecting with customers and other businesses online. The system is expanding from 22 generic top-level domain names—including standbys like .com and .net—to more than 1,000. New suffixes such as .online, .credit, and .web will join the fray.

This expansion provides fertile ground for cybersquatters and fraudsters to wreak havoc, with damaging consequences for legitimate businesses. The new suffixes also create opportunities for data security breaches and a potentially confusing landscape for consumers.
