For the first time since the Dodd Frank Act was passed, the publicly traded companies in the Philadelphia area disclosed their CEO-worker pay ratios. Experts analyzing the reports commented on what they say about a company's structure.

Companies that hire many part-time employees or have employees working in countries with lower standards of living tend to have higher CEO-worker pay ratios. Variability among companies' pay ratios could also be attributed to differences in how they report median pay.

Ballard Spahr Partner Mary Mullany noted one potential outcome of the disclosure of median salary.

"Can you imagine being an HR director and having people knock on your door to ask, 'Why do I make less than the median? What am I, chopped liver?'" she said.
