The U.S. government has filed criminal and civil charges against a former Equifax Inc executive over alleged insider trading linked to last year's massive data breach at the credit reporting company, officials said on Wednesday.

Jun Ying, a former Equifax technology executive, faces criminal charges filed by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia and anti-fraud civil charges filed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

It is the first time that the U.S. government has pursued insider trading charges against somebody accused of profiting from information about a cyber attack, said Ballard Spahr Partner David L. Axelrod.
