Ballard Spahr has been named Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year by the Georgia Asylum and Immigration Network (GAIN). The firm will be honored today at the organization’s Go Formal for Freedom Gala & Awards Ceremony.

Over the last two years, Ballard Spahr lawyers have devoted hundreds of hours to securing asylum for clients referred by GAIN. Led by Mitchell A. Katz, chair of the firm's Intellectual Property Department, the office’s asylum team represents clients, including Syrian nationals, whose lives and families were threatened when they protested government human rights abuses.

“Ballard Spahr is proud to partner with GAIN and grateful for its support in ensuring the protection of individuals challenging injustice worldwide,” said Mr. Katz. “Our clients’ bravery is inspiring and we are thankful for the opportunity to help them.”

GAIN is an Atlanta-based nonprofit organization that offers pro bono legal representation through volunteer attorneys to asylum seekers, immigrant victims of human trafficking, domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crimes. It was founded in 2005 as the Atlanta Bar Asylum Project, a loose affiliation among the leadership of the Atlanta Bar Association, Catholic Charities, and volunteer associates from the city’s top law firms.

Ballard Spahr has a long-standing commitment to providing pro bono legal services. Each year, firm attorneys contribute more than 35,000 hours of pro bono legal services to a range of recipients including nonprofit organizations, low-income individuals, and arts groups. It has an established Asylum practice group, composed of lawyers who have successfully represented asylum petitioners from Africa, Asia, and Central America.
