The Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada honored Ballard Spahr partner Bill Curran with the Myrna Williams Children’s Pro Bono Award on Friday. The award recognizes exceptional representation of abused and neglected children who are in the foster care system.

Mr. Curran, Managing Partner of the firm’s Las Vegas office, has served as an advocate for children for more than a decade. In a tribute to Mr. Curran, a former child client told of how Mr. Curran made him “feel like his own grandson.”

More recently, Mr. Curran has been representing a family of five siblings ranging from five months to 11 years old who came to the attention of authorities when they were caught shoplifting at the direction of their parents. The children have significant mental health issues, and Mr. Curran has been advocating to find stable housing and to get them the help they need.

Mr. Curran received the award at the Legal Aid Center’s annual benefit luncheon, which honored local attorneys who have collectively provided more than 25,000 hours of free legal services for low-income Nevadans in Clark County. The Legal Center and its volunteers represent more than 2,600 clients.

In addition to his work on behalf of children, Mr. Curran also is Chair of the board of directors of Nevada Legal Services, and offers pro bono counsel to a number of nonprofit agencies in the Las Vegas area.

Each year, Ballard Spahr attorneys contribute more than 35,000 hours of pro bono legal services to a range of recipients including nonprofit organizations, low-income individuals, and arts groups.
