Laura E. Krabill, a litigation partner in Ballard Spahr’s Philadelphia office and a member of the LGBTQ community, has been selected by The Legal Intelligencer as one of its Diverse Attorneys of the Year for 2013.

The biennial award recognizes outstanding diverse attorneys from across Pennsylvania. Winners are selected by The Legal’s editorial staff on the basis of their outstanding professional achievements in the two years since the last awards were given out.

“A large part of why I work for Ballard Spahr is its longstanding commitment to diversity—it’s an open and supportive place for LGBT attorneys,” said Ms. Krabill, who is a member of Equality Ballard, an affinity group for LGBT attorneys, and the firm’s Diversity Council. “I’m honored to receive this award.”

Ms. Krabill was part of the team that scored a rare bondholder enforcement victory against Argentina on behalf of Ballard Spahr client Capital Ventures International (CVI), in which the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit upheld CVI’s attachment of Argentine assets. She also obtained dismissal in a case brought by a shareholder challenging a proposed insurance company merger by Penn Millers Holding Corporation. Recently, she obtained judgment on the pleadings for clients who owned senior certificates in a subprime mortgage securitization, resulting in the distribution of more than $150 million to senior certificate holders—a ruling that was affirmed by the Second Circuit.

“We believe that our clients are best served when the solutions we offer spring from varied viewpoints and perspectives,” said Virginia Essandoh, the firm’s Chief Diversity Officer. “Laura is an integral part of the team at Ballard Spahr, and she sets a high standard of excellence in her work.”

Ms. Krabill focuses on complex commercial matters. They include securities fraud class action litigation, shareholder derivative actions, ERISA stock drop class actions, consumer fraud class actions, and other securities, contract, and commercial tort cases.

“Laura’s legal acumen is a tremendous asset to the firm, and her stellar litigation work shows that diverse perspectives drive insightful counsel,” said John B. Langel, Chair of the Litigation Department. “We congratulate her on this honor.”
