Dee Spagnuolo, an attorney in Ballard Spahr’s Philadelphia office and a member of the LGBTQ community, became a partner on July 1, firm Chair Mark Stewart announced.

Ms. Spagnuolo is a member of Ballard Spahr’s Litigation Department and the White Collar/Investigations Group. She focuses her practice on the representation of companies and individuals in all aspects of complex civil litigation, internal corporate investigations, and compliance and regulatory matters. Ms. Spagnuolo has defended clients in civil litigation and criminal investigations involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), state and federal false claims acts (FCA), and disadvantaged business enterprise (DBE) fraud.

Ms. Spagnuolo serves on the firm’s Hiring Committee and Diversity Council. As a member of Equality Ballard, an affinity group for LGBTQ lawyers, she promotes the LGBTQ community at the firm and mentors young LGBTQ attorneys.

Within the legal community, Ms. Spagnuolo provides pro bono services to advance LGBTQ civil rights. She has provided testimony in the Pennsylvania legislature in opposition to a proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. She also has focused her efforts on educating Pennsylvanians about the ways in which same-sex couples face discrimination in a wide range of areas, including public benefits, property rights, insurance coverage, and FMLA benefits. Ms. Spagnuolo leads a team of nearly a dozen other Ballard Spahr attorneys working in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Gay and Lesbian Rights Committee to develop a report that analyzes the disparate ways in which same-sex couples are treated under Pennsylvania law. She also regularly represents Ballard Spahr at national legal conferences, including the Lavender Law Conference.

Ms. Spagnuolo acknowledged Ballard Spahr’s commitment to diversity, crediting the firm as an open and supportive workplace for LGBTQ attorneys. The firm is home to several affinity groups, including Equality Ballard: the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Lawyers and Friends Group.
