Law firms around the country have launched hundreds of blogs as a low cost way to market their capabilities.

Alan Kaplinsky, who leads Ballard Spahr’s consumer financial services group, lobbied the firm to launch CFPB Monitor on the same day the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau opened its doors in 2011. It recently changed the name of the blog to Consumer Finance Monitor, thinking that the CFPB’s power might wane under the Trump administration and it needed to focus on other federal and state agencies. Partner Barbara Mishkin now dedicates all of her time toward tracking the goings-on of those agencies and posting blog items.

“It generates a lot of work for the firm,” Kaplinsky said of the blog, one of four at Ballard Spahr. Kaplinsky said on numerous occasions, business executives have approached one of the lawyers on his team after reading a post to seek legal advice.
