Colorado Tax Payment Deadline Extended Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

March 25, 2020

Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed an executive order (here) on March 20 extending the April 15, 2020 tax payment deadlines for all individuals and businesses to July 15, 2020. In addition to 2019 income tax payments, the order provides that 2020 estimated tax payments due on or after April 15 and on or before June 15, 2020 (the two next estimated tax due dates for most taxpayers) will not be subject to interest and penalties as long as payment is made by July 15, 2020.

Although the order does not expressly mention the April 15 filing deadline, Colorado previously signaled that it intends to align all applicable deadlines with those announced by the IRS. In the event that Colorado does not announce an extension of the filing deadline, taxpayers may take advantage of the state’s automatic six-month extension of time to file (although payment must be made by July 15 to avoid interest and penalties).
