A Perfect Fit

Happy New Year! As many of you have already heard, in early December we joined Ballard Spahr, a national firm with more than 500 lawyers in 13 offices across the country. This is an exciting time for us as we meet our new colleagues and discover the many ways they will enhance our practice.

Our team has grown substantially. The three of us serve as Practice Leaders for the Mortgage Banking Group, and are members of Ballard Spahr’s Consumer Financial Services Group. This nationally recognized group has done pioneering work in consumer financial services litigation, regulation, and transactions. It regularly handles issues stemming from advertising and marketing, privacy, data mining, credit reporting, and debt collection practices.

We're already seeing the terrific synergy that will come from joining this tremendous team.

A New Year and a New Look

Longtime readers of the Mortgage Banking Update will notice that it now has a fresh new look. We chose the motif of puzzle pieces not only as a way of illustrating the “alphabet soup” of statutes and regulations that govern the mortgage industry, but also to show the intricacy of how they all fit together—sometimes not so easily.

In the coming months, you’ll see a slightly revised format for the Mortgage Banking Update that will include broader coverage of industry litigation through our team of mortgage banking litigators who handle industry cases throughout the country.  More about them below.

We also invite you to visit the CFPB Monitor, a blog where Ballard Spahr lawyers offer frank and incisive discussion of developments at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Recent blog entries discuss the “recess” appointment of Richard Cordray to serve as Director of the CFPB, noting that “the CFPB will waste no time in beginning to exercise its authority to regulate mortgage originators and servicers.”

Meet the Litigators

We will continue to focus on regulatory issues, but now we are joined by a deep bench of seasoned industry litigators who will be a part of the Mortgage Banking Group.
