With Help From Ballard Spahr, Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle Moves Toward New Facility

November 16, 2020

The Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle is moving toward its new facility thanks in part to pro bono assistance provided by Michael Pollack of Ballard Spahr’s Real Estate Department.

The Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle’s new building will be 20,000 square feet, about double its previous square footage. It will be able to serve as many as 350 kids daily, up from the average of 160 served each day last year. Groundbreaking is anticipated in December 2020, with a completion date slated for late winter of 2022 or spring 2023.

“This new, state-of-the-art building will allow us to compete for funding in ways that were not available before,” said Lutonya Russell-Humes, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle. “We’re looking forward to giving this community a clubhouse they can be proud of and serving more children than ever before.”

Mr. Pollack worked with the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle, a developer, and the city to organize and formalize a transaction in which the site of the club’s existing facility would be part of a mixed use development, including an affordable housing building and parking structure, with the new facility being built on another part of the parcel.

Ballard Spahr and the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle were matched by Pro Bono Partnership, which recruits and supports volunteer attorneys with a range of specializations to help nonprofits in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. Ballard Spahr encourages each of its lawyers to devote meaningful time to pro bono matters, and has worked with the Partnership since 2010 to identify opportunities for nonprofits in need of assistance. During this time, the firm has worked on 62 pro bono matters for nonprofits throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Ballard Spahr offers billable hour credit for pro bono work, formally recognizes attorneys' pro bono achievements, and the firm provides more than 50,000 hours of pro bono work each year.
