In 1978, nearly a century after its founding in Philadelphia, Ballard Spahr began its expansion with the opening of an office in Washington, D.C. Today, the Washington office is one of the firm's largest and is a recognized leader in energy and project finance, housing, public finance and public-private partnerships, real estate and real estate finance, mortgage banking, and tax.

Our D.C. attorneys handle issues facing regulated industries and are recognized leaders in energy and project finance, housing, public finance and public-private partnerships, real estate and real estate finance, mortgage banking, and tax.

Our real estate practice -- representing clients locally, regionally, and nationally -- is regarded as one best in the tri-state area. We handle a variety of commercial and residential real estate matters representing developers, private equity providers, lenders, and commercial sellers and purchasers.

Our litigators advise lending institutions, government contractors, and real estate holding companies in various commercial matters. With a focus on consumer finance, the group has defended many banks' and corporations' claims involving federal and state consumer lending statutes. They also handle complex securities, UCC, civil rights, and employment litigation. In business and finance, we're known for our work with investment management companies, EB-5 immigration investment funds, SPACs, oil and gas funds, and international master-feeder structures.

At Ballard Spahr, we believe our clients are best served by innovative solutions that spring from varied viewpoints and perspectives. And we are committed to creating a vibrant community where people of all backgrounds can thrive. The firm is nationally recognized for its commitment to diversity and inclusion and ranked fourth in the nation for its percentage of women equity partners by The American Lawyer. In 2015, our D.C. office celebrated its 10th year hosting the Resume Writing and Interview Skills Workshop for Diverse 1L Students. The office also supports local affinity bar associations through sponsorships and job fair outreach to diverse law students.

Our attorneys take an active role in the civic life of their communities. Pro bono service is a hallmark of the firm, and our Washington attorneys devote hundreds of hours to pro bono cases every year. Attorneys and staff in Washington support many worthy causes, including a number that provide assistance to homeless men and women.
