Brenda M. Ching, an experienced attorney and business executive who has designed, implemented, and operated employee benefit plans and executive compensation arrangements, has joined Ballard Spahr as of counsel in its Los Angeles office, firm Chair Mark Stewart announced today.

Ms. Ching is well-versed in all varieties of compensation and benefit arrangements, with particular recent emphasis on the impact of the Affordable Care Act, the HIPAA privacy and security rules, and other developments in the health benefits arena. She has 15 years of experience in the administration of employer-sponsored retirement programs, including qualified and non-qualified plans, incentive compensation programs, and various types of employer stock compensation.

“Brenda brings valuable industry perspective and a wealth of hands-on experience in managing benefits and compensation programs and ensuring they are fiscally and legally sound as well as competitive,” said Brian M. Pinheiro, Chair of Ballard Spahr's Business and Finance Department and Practice Leader of the firm's Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Group.

Her addition to the Los Angeles office is part of Ballard Spahr’s strategic growth for that office and increasing its presence in the West, where the firm just opened an office in Boulder, Colorado.

“We want to continue broadening our capabilities to meet the full range of our clients’ needs,” said Peter L. Haviland, Managing Partner of the Los Angeles office. “Brenda is a strong addition to our existing employee benefits and executive compensation practice and will be a great resource to our attorneys on the West Coast as they help clients navigate today’s changing regulatory environment.”

Prior to joining Ballard Spahr, Ms. Ching served as an attorney and in executive positions at a global Fortune 500 company, national consulting firms, and a benefits technology firm.

“I have been focused on providing excellent client service throughout my entire career,” said Ms. Ching. “I’ve had first-hand experience working with attorneys at Ballard Spahr and know they share that passion. It’s exciting to join the firm and be part of the growth of this premier practice on the West Coast.”

Other attorneys in the Los Angeles office include commercial and financial services trial lawyers, real estate litigators, and corporate attorneys. They handle matters in renewable energy, new media, and innovative financing in real estate, as well as high-profile litigation and matters for fintech companies and their business partners. The office also has a noted corporate receivership practice.

At Ballard Spahr, Ms. Ching is a member of the Business and Finance Department and the Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Group. For five decades that group has provided legal advice on a full range of employee benefits and executive compensation matters—from qualified retirement plans to health and welfare benefits plans—to employers from publicly traded multinational corporations with more than 50,000 employees to well-known regional and family-owned companies.
