Ballard Spahr will host a Philly VIP/LawWorks legal clinic to provide local small business owners with free legal advice on Monday, January 21. The event is part of the firm’s annual Day of Service celebration held in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The clinic offers micro-entrepreneurs the opportunity to get pro bono advice on legal issues affecting small businesses, such as employment regulations, leases, and tax issues. Fifty attorneys from Ballard Spahr and the in-house legal departments of several Philadelphia corporations are expected to volunteer.

“It’s a Ballard Spahr tradition to sponsor community service activities on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. But it is particularly appropriate for a law firm to sponsor a free legal clinic to support the community,” said Pro Bono Counsel Mary Gay Scanlon. “Our obligation to provide pro bono service is based upon the idea that lawyers should use their unique skills to support access to the legal system. When we use those skills to support the success and growth of small businesses in our community, we all benefit.”

The clinic will be held from 10 a.m. until noon at Ballard Spahr’s Philadelphia office at 1735 Market Street. The firm is also participating in other community service activities with Philadelphia READS, the National Liberty Museum, and the Pennsylvania SPCA. This year marks the firm’s eighth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
