Mitzie V. Smith-Mack, of counsel in the Real Estate Department at Ballard Spahr LLP, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Housing and Development Law Institute (HDLI).

HDLI is a nonprofit organization created as a legal resource for the affordable and public housing industry, with a national membership comprising more than 200 public housing and redevelopment agencies, law firms, and other industry stakeholders. It provides members with support services including legal publications, educational opportunities, and individualized counseling.

"It's an honor to join the HDLI Board," Ms. Smith-Mack said. "I look forward to supporting the HDLI in its mission to enlighten and inform members on the legal issues facing public housing and redevelopment agencies."

Ms. Smith-Mack is a member of Ballard Spahr's Housing Group, which represents more than 60 housing authorities across the country and counsels clients in the acquisition, development, expansion, and disposition of virtually every type of housing. The group's attorneys also handle closings of bond transactions as bond and underwriter's counsel, as well as tax-credit transactions.

Ms. Smith-Mack's practice is based in Ballard Spahr's Washington, D.C., office and focuses on HOPE VI and mixed-finance development transactions, including mixed income (rental and homeownership) and mixed-use communities. Before joining the firm, Ms. Smith-Mack spent more than 10 years at the District of Columbia Housing Authority's Office of General Counsel in various legal capacities, including General Counsel.
