Alan S. Petlak, an experienced litigator who focuses on real estate and commercial matters, has joined Ballard Spahr LLP in Los Angeles. His addition further strengthens the firm's distressed real estate practice in the West.
"Alan is a great addition," said David C. Sampson, managing partner of the Los Angeles office. "His work in distressed real estate holds obvious appeal. But he also has great experience in complex commercial litigation and securities matters, adding depth to our litigation practice here in L.A."
Mr. Petlak is of counsel in the Litigation Department and a member of the Complex Commercial Litigation Group. His strong experience in securities litigation and real estate workouts will complement two practice initiatives designed to keep clients agile and informed about market changes―the Distressed Real Estate Initiative (DREI) and the Economic Stabilization and Recovery Initiative (ESRI).
David A. Barksdale, co-partner-in-charge of DREI and ESRI, said he is thrilled to have Mr. Petlak join him in the West. "Our practices mesh, and his joining us helps serve clients in what are remarkably challenging times for real estate lenders and investors," Mr. Barksdale said.
Mr. Petlak agreed. "I represent both borrowers and lenders in the distressed properties arena and handle workouts from a litigator's perspective," Mr. Petlak said. "Together, we can expand the distressed real estate practice and support a national client base."
