Michael W. Skojec, a partner at Ballard Spahr LLP, is directing the formation of a new Construction Law section under the Maryland State Bar Association (MSBA). Mr. Skojec currently chairs the MSBA's Special Committee on Construction Law, the precursor of a permanent MSBA section.

The aim of the Construction Law Committee of MSBA is to provide educational and professional activities for Maryland attorneys who practice construction law in litigation or transactional practices. Under Mr. Skojec's direction, the committee has begun offering construction law programs, including the most recent in March where contractors discussed the difficulties for the industry in the current economic downturn. The committee also intends to publish the first practical deskbook in the state's history on construction law for attorneys and to update older publications.

Mr. Skojec is a partner in the Litigation and Real Estate Departments and a member of the Construction, Construction Dispute Resolution, Complex Commercial Litigation, and Housing Groups.

Mr. Skojec focuses his practice on construction matters, including defending or bringing mechanics lien and bond claims and litigating other construction disputes as well as regularly counseling clients on design and construction contracts, risk management, dispute resolution, and insurance claim issues. Additionally, he defends housing discrimination charges and accessibility lawsuits under the Fair Housing Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and similar laws and advises clients on how to avoid such claims.
